getmyauthority.com FAQ’s
Q. I’m currently signed on to a carrier with my 379 Pete. What do I need to get my own authority?
A. You will need your own US DOT#, MC# (operating authority) and your UCR registration. You will also need your apportioned license plates (IRP) and your IFTA license.
Q. I run a dually with a wedge trailer and my GVWR is under 26000 lbs. What do I need?
A. You will also need your own US DOT#, MC# (operating authority) and your UCR registration. Because you will be running at 26,000 lbs or less, you will not need apportioned license plates (IRP) or an IFTA license.
Q. How long will it take to get my authority?
A. We will have your US DOT and MC #’s the same day, usually within 1 hour. Your US DOT # is active immediately. Your MC # will take 18-21 days for the FMCSA to activate and there is no way to speed this process up. The FMCSA will not issue a temporary or emergency authority.
Q. What is the difference between a Common carrier and a Contract carrier?
A. The only difference between a Common and Contract carrier is the insurance requirements. A Common carrier requires Liability and Cargo insurance. A Contract carrier requires Liability insurance.
Q. After my application for my authority is filed, what else needs to be done to activate my authority?
A. We will file everything for you except your proof of insurance. The FMCSA will only accept this filing from your insurance company.
Q. My application is filed and I have my US DOT and MC #’s. Can I begin operations?
A. Not until your authority becomes active. If you are stopped by a DOT officer, and your authority is not active, he can place you Out of Service and fine you $1,000 to $10,000.
Q. Will I need anything else to travel in the 48 states?
A. There are 4 states that have their own weight distance tax permits. They are Kentucky, New York, New Mexico and Oregon. If you will travel through any of these states you are required to either have a temporary or a permanent permit. In most cases, the permanent permit will be less expensive to obtain.
Q. I am a private carrier and only transport my own products or equipment in my home state, I am not for hire. What do I need?
A. You will need to obtain your US DOT # if you operate vehicles over 10,000 lbs GVWR. If you operate a pickup truck and a trailer, you will be over the 10,000 lbs and will need your US DOT #.
Q. I am a private, interstate carrier. I have 2 trucks that travel to 4 states. 1 is 33,000 GVWR and the other is 25,900 GVWR. What do I need?
A. You will need your US DOT # and your UCR registration. The 33,000 GVWR truck will also need apportioned license plates and an IFTA license.
Q. What is the UCR registration?
A. The UCR is the Unified Carrier Registration. This is the program that replaced the SSRS (Single State Registration System). This is required to register your operations with all the states.
Q. Will I need to have separate US DOT numbers for each of my trucks?
A. No. Each business can only have one US DOT number. You use the same number for all your trucks.
