All motor carriers operating a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) across state lines must have and display a USDOT number. A CMV is any vehicle by itself or used in combination with a trailer, which the total loaded weight, of the truck and/or combination, exceeds 10,000 lbs. All Intrastate vehicles transporting Hazmat or US Mail with a GVWR of 10,001+ lbs must also have a USDOT #. Many states also require you to have a USDOT # for solely intrastate operations. They are: AL, CO, FL, GA, IA, KS, KY, MI, MN, NY, OH, OR, SD, TN, UT, WV and WI. Farm vehicles over 10,000 lbs. GVWR are also required to have a US DOT # now.
If you already have your USDOT # or once you aquire one, you will need to maintain it. You are required to do biennial updates, name or address changes, out of business notifications or reapply after revocation of new entrant.
